rick_zackery   Rick Zackery and his wife Peggie were brought to Portland from Louisville, Kentucky in 2001 to take responsibility for developing and directing the management team of CLASSIC PIANOS. Rick earned his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Kentucky and his Master’s degree in Music Performance on French horn from Rice University’s renowned Shepherd School of Music in Houston. Rick is a fully trained concert tuner and technician with over 20 years of experience. He has tuned for Sunriver Music Festival, concert pianists, and teachers. He also works closely with professors and university music departments in setting up Piano Loan Programs.

Peggy Z   Peggie Zackery holds a BA in French from Arizona State University. While playing flute in the Jewish Community Center Orchestra in Louisville, KY, she met her husband Rick. Peggie is part of Classic’s management team, overseeing its community fund raising events, recital hall, teaching studios, and partnership with the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). She is a “continuing piano student,” and says that taking piano lessons helps her better relate to her customers. Rick and Peggie’s two daughters, Maggie and Rachel, also study piano. Rachel is an accomplished French horn player and is a past member of the Metropolitan Youth Symphony.

Brian Unis   Brian Unis, eldest of the Unis sons, literally grew up in the piano industry.  Spending nearly every free moment with his father, Maurice Unis, at the original Moe’s Pianos, Brian discovered his shared family passion for pianos at an early age.  After graduating from Sandy High School, Brian attended Mt. Hood Community College.  His love of pianos compelled him to partner with his father to establish Classic Pianos.  Brian was mentored as an apprentice in all aspects of the business — including moving, accounting, piano restoration, sales, and management.  He enjoys learning to play the piano, and has been taking lessons as a lifelong hobby.  Brian is married with three children.

James W   James Walls majored in Liberal Arts at the University of Oregon and studied piano with Dr. John Hamilton, a prodigy of keyboard icon Wanda Landowska. Jim has played piano since age five and has been featured on BBC Radio. His teachers have been Alma Proctor, Pasadena; jazz great Mary Field of Portland; Jim Rousey, San Francisco; and classical piano with Katherine George, Principal pianist with the Oregon Symphony. For 15 years Jim was vice president of marketing for Steinway Musical Properties, Inc., Boston. Currently Jim teaches piano and plays corporate and private events, including: The Pittock Mansion and Huber’s Café.

Christopher R   Christopher Ranney is a recording studio specialist. He studied music theory at the University of Michigan and creative composition from concert pianist/recording artist William Bolcom. Chris trained in audio engineering under David Ruffo and assisted on many live remote jazz recordings in New York, including: Birdland, The Village Vanguard, Blue Note, and Symphony Space. Prior to joining Classic Pianos, after moving to Portland from Berkeley, California, Chris was part of Maurice Unis’s Forte Marketing national sales and marketing group — conducting university, institutional, and special dealer event sales coast-to-coast.

John S   John Slavick joined Classic from Houston, Texas where he was shop manager for Forshey Music. He apprenticed with concert piano tuner Dean Shank at Rice University, and earned master technician status with Steinway & Sons. John has tuned for the Houston Symphony, Houston Grand Opera, Rice University, and Texas A & M. Experienced in classic piano restoration, John oversees all piano restoration projects in the historic brick Restoration Shoppe at Classic Pianos. Special emphasis is given to American pianos by Steinway & Sons, Mason & Hamlin, and Baldwin for the vintage Classic Collection.

Kathy W   Kathy Walke began working in the piano business in 1981 as the Controller for  Greene Music Company  of  San Diego, California.  For 27 years, Kathy has been the dealer  liaison for world renowned artists  and  arts  organizations  with Yamaha Artists Services.  She has four years of experience in piano sales, both  local  and national, with Yamaha and Steinway & Sons.  January 1, 2008, Kathy assumed responsibilities for Concert and Event Services for Classic Pianos of Portland — managing  Classic’s extensive  concert  rental  fleet of  full-concert, semi-concert, and baby grand pianos for artists and events.

Margaret W   Margaret Woods began her lifelong career in music as a professional entertainer traveling and singing with Buck Owens, Loretta Lynn, and others. Later, Margaret developed organ concerts and organized organ and keyboard clubs throughout Oregon — including the Eugene Keyboard Club, a former Hammond Organ Society organization. She owned her own music store in Portland for 25 years. In 2006 she was chosen to manage Promotional Events for Classic Pianos — with responsibilities for special promotional concerts, home shows, festivals, Street of Dreams showcases, and other special events.

Cathy T   Cathy Traylor minored in music at Miami of Ohio and later played piano for Civic Theater and Storefront Theater productions in Portland. She started working with Maurice Unis at the old Moe’s Pianos, in charge of event rentals and master classes. In 1995, she left Sherman Clay to work with Unis again at Forte Marketing Group, where she continues to organize event sales nationwide. At Classic Pianos of Portland, Cathy is responsible for public relations, advertising and marketing activities — including program advertising for the Oregon Symphony Orchestra; Oregon Ballet Theatre; Portland Center for the Performing Arts; The Old Church Concert Series; and newspaper advertising for sales and university events.
